Las Peñas

El "motor" del Descenso

"Las Peñas" (local name for the teams) are the engine and the active part of the celebration as its main goal is to build the the best float to participate on the parade the day of Descenso Folklórico del Nalón. Together with their float and the charangas (street bands), "Las Peñas" are the real protagonists of the parade.
For days, and even months, the Peñas organize their work, focusing in preparing costumes, buiding the floats, and other important detials as catering or music. Everything must be ready to proudly show it to the public on the third Sunday of August. And if it rains... Let it rain!

EL DESCENSO'S LEGACY: POPULAR SUPPORT AND GREAT FRIENDSHIP

Idiosincrasia de las Peñas

The fact of being part of a Peña gives each member an identity and sense of partipicipation and thus "El Descenso" belongs to all of them. This feeling makes this celebration important even beyond the month of August and it is integrated into the day-to-day life of the council of Laviana.
Thanks to the Peñas, friendships are built to endure over time.
Solidarity amongst Peñas members emerges during the process of floats construction, since at some point the cooperation and help from others is needed. This sense of community is specially felt on the workshop located on the Exhibition Center of Pola de Laviana.

A helping hand is also essential in the critical moments such us the lifting of the floats or when they have to taken out of the Nalón River to reach the finish line at Prau de la Chalana.
